Romantic Scenes in Three Recent Movies

With the house repair going on in full swing, it will be a wonder if I could get a romantic thought edged in. But fate has its way. After the day's work when I relaxed in front of the TV I happened to catch some really good movies, movies that filled my heart and made the whole experience so complete. I was lucky to have caught up with Jerry Maguire (for the 1000th time), Trouble With the Curve (a nice, feel-good movie), Shape of Water (a well-done, different theme movie), Trumbo (an awesome biography elevated by Bryan Cranston's acting). February is Oscar month and viewers like me who have been seeing very little of the insides of a theater and lesser of my subscription of Amazon Prime or Netflix, get to watch older movies on TV.

February is also Valentine's month. Yes, I got around to it. And I don't have any plans for tomorrow just in case you were wondering. I should be happy if I were to catch any one of my favourite movies at night with S's super yumm spanish omlette to go. The latter would be a surprise really, considering he has no clue that it is Valentine's Day tomorrow.

Anyway, there are some movies which make you feel like 'love' is the only thing that makes the world go round...actually it does. And even in these movies, with the super strong story line and to-die for acting, there are a few moments or scenes which makes you want to watch them again and again. I can list a whole lot of them but let me account for the ones I have seen recently. And when I say recently I mean post 2010.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) - Just when Ayan (Ranbir Kapoor) launches into Channa Mereya song and the significance of his impeccable singing dawns on Alizeh. That he loves her. "Did my song have sadness and emotion? For whom was it?" She doesn't want to know because she knows the answer. It's her wedding and she is love with someone else. Their confrontation is fraught with tension and sadness. "If you can't be mine, you can't be anyone else's Alizeh" he says with childish selfishness. I think it was one of the rare movies where I saw a hero with so many faults, who was human and who didn't mind crying on screen.  That scene pretty much made up the entire movie for me. I keep rewinding to that beautiful song, with its poignant lyrics and its catchy tune form a strong case for Ayan's falling in love moment. But to appreciate that, one would have to have seen a lot of the movie.

Manmarziyan (2018) - Another movie which made me tear up was Manmarziyan. For me, this was one of the best movies of 2018. And also was the movie which made me fall for Abhishek Bacchan again. That man is so deserving of adulation and I am so glad that with this movie he is back doing what he is best at - serious roles. The song Halla, shows Robbie (a stricken Abhishek Bacchan) coming out of Vicky's (an out-there proper Panju Vicky Kaushal who didn't look like he acted even in one scene in that movie. He seemed to be just living the part. Awesome) house after seeing his wife kiss the man. Aww that scene. My god. The song vibrates with his disappointment and delusion. His stance, walk, tears, everything...simply catapults the viewer to his realm. He has this soulful, deep eyes that speak so much, which is quite unlike Rumi's (Taapsee Pannu) vibrant, simmering body language.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)- There are very few Hollywood romantic movies that have released here that has a scene like the ones mentioned above. Perhaps I haven't watched enough in the past few years, perhaps they have not struck a chord with me. The last Hollywood romantic movie that really moved me was Silver Linings Playbook. I think like Jerry Maguire or Pretty woman or Love Actually, I could watch this movie a zillion times and not get bored of the dysfunctional couple - Tiffany and Pat's love story. Jennifer Lawson as Tiffany is explosive. She owns the character and her eyes convey so much. Bradley Cooper, one of my favourite actors of present times, as Pat is just perfect. His confession and proposal at the end of the movie just squeezes what ever air I have left in me. The whole movie sizzles with their chemistry. The two of them have psychological problems and the movie is unapologetic nor judgmental. This is a proper love story of a man and a woman falling in love over betting and a dance competition.

I am hoping to relive a few of these moments and others in movies tomorrow. Hope you have better plans than that!

Must catch manmarziyaan. Keep heading good things about it!

Ae Dil Hai Mushkhi..’hero with so many faults’. I think that is the role that Ranbir Kapoor is forever playing (cue Wake up sid, Tamasha, Ae Jawani Hai Deewani, Rockstar..)

I am surprised at how many people didn't catch Manmarziyan. It is really a very nice movie Anita. :-D I am a huge Ranbir fan, and mostly because he does justice to any role he plays, but he does this flawed hero role the best. Can't fault it. I hope he doesn't get stereotyped into these roles. Fingers crossed.

After reading the well-written post, though the scene the blogger has mentioned from ADHM has been acted brilliantly I have to say I disagree with the movie being a romantic one at all! Glamourizing the stalkerish portrayal of the male protagonist is the last thing we need in today's world.
I completely agree with Anita's comment. Ranbir Kapoor is a good actor, no doubt but a great actor should be able to play any role with finesse. Example Ranveer Singh, be it a Bajirao or a Ricky Behl or a Murad from Gully Boy. Such a varied range of spectacular performances. Whereas, Ranbir Kapoor... Dude, how many movies do you need to come of age???🤦

@Anonymous - Thank you for reading the post and leaving a comment. :)

Actually Ranbir's predicament is similar to SRK's in that the latter gets stereotyped as the romantic hero, even now, when he is past his fifties. I like SRK and would love for someone to do a serious romance with him, but again for such a big star I don't know why he doesn't do something to change things. Ranbir has played nice roles in movies like Rocket Singh (one of my all time favourite movies), Barfi and Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani. His coming-of-age roles have been garnering a modicum of success and I don't think he will want to rock the boat. But if ADHM is any indication, the viewership was very divided. Probably that should be his wake up call. Have written about this movie in one of my posts on this blog. :)

Oki, I am a bit biased, because I love that guy!

going to add these to my 'to watch' list of Hindi movies ... i'm most often disappointed by their unrealistic stories, but these sound good!

War - Coolness Overload

War turned out to be one of the very few Hindi movies that I got to catch within the first week of its realease. It is also one of the very few movies that I have watched without reading the reviews. And it was truly the only one Hindi movie that I have watched in a night show: the movie started at 10:40pm and got over at 2:00 am. It tells a lot about a movie that could keep me awake through out without even a yawn. The only times I opened my mouth was when my jaw dropped. That happened on many occasions I confess, what with the incredible single shot fights on land, in water, in the air and on ice alongwith the minor detail of these jaw dropping stunts being performed by a grizzled, muscled, chiseled, sculpted, edible, incredibly high on testosterone Hrithik Roshan and his puppy cute counterpart Tiger Shroff. Be still my heart This post is not a review of the movie. Nope, you have probably seen the two, two and a half starred reviews online. There are reviews that have thrashed

Nature's Green Thumb - Kotagiri

So true When Sharan warned us that we had a ten minute walk from the road to reach his guest house in Hadathorai, Kotagiri, I was quite sure that he was exaggerating. The pictures he had posted did not evoke much confidence in me. They were predominantly of his wild garden and of the beautiful mountains around, but hardly of any of the bedrooms or bathrooms in the homestay. A ten minute walk to his guest house? Who was he kidding? Either this place was going to be a hole in the wall, I thought or it was going to be one hell of an experience. At the back of my mind though, I had some confidence in S’s choice of this place. He had a knack of picking up homestays and guest houses that were quaint/comfortable/superb and available for a song. This, he had picked up from Airbnb A magic of colours - Kotagiri So when we drove from Chennai, via Avinashi and picked up 50-something Sukumar, the guy taking care of the place, from the Kotagiri bus stand, I got th

Nagarhole National Park

I know my first post of the new year has been 24 days into the month, but I am just back from one of my first trips (of hopefully many) in 2019. A dear friend had got us booked in a forest guest house at Nagarhole National Park or Rajiv Gandhi Tiger Reserve and we friends just grabbed the opportunity without a moment's thought. The road leading from Hunsur through the forest I love going to such off beat places as the experiences are different and the crowd is less. My Kotagiri blog post is one of the most read posts here, and Nagarhole is as wild and beautiful perhaps even more than Kotagiri. We are talking about a real forest here. It is the real deal. And like all good things, it is kind of hard to experience. The dark, misty forest Nagarhole National Park is home to one of the most vulnerable species of animals in the world right now - the magnificent Tiger. Statistics show that there are very few tigers in the world. You may be sure that a good number of those
